Why do we chant before Yoga class?
Yoga means to unite. We use chanting as a way of coming together as a class at the beginning of our practice. It is also an opportunity to tune into your breath.
I have stiff ankles. Each time we are on our knees in class they hurt. My teacher recommended that I use a stool instead of kneeling during seated postures. But isn't this a cop-out? I will never get more flexible if I don't push myself, right?
We have a funny view of the path towards growth in the west, this 'no pain, no gain' mentality, which is completely off from what we are trying to accomplish in Yoga Awareness classes. You must instead work with awareness towards your own edge. If your body is experiencing discomfort or pain it will disturb the mind and take away from the positive experience of the asana. It also can be counter productive to overstretch the body in any given asana. It is important that we remember this as we work through each yoga class with a level of attention without tension, and comfort without slackness. It is the space between the extremes that you will find the most beneficial state in which to practice.
I have past injuries I am currently working with. Will Yoga help me to recover?
Yes, at the yoga therapy level. However, the open yoga class is not a group therapeutic class even though Yoga Awareness teachers are being trained with this awareness. Therefore, I often advise new students to work privately with me first if they have injury or uncertainty before I send them to an open yoga class. This establishes a strong foundation for teacher and student relationship. From here it becomes clear what the next best step is for the student. It could be attending group yoga class or which wellness program is appropriate for the student's recovery.
Zoom Yoga Class Testimonial - Don Anderson
Thanks for doing the zoom session yesterday. The cramp that had been in my back all day was gone when we finished. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't feel grateful for finding you, your sharing of your expertise, and your encouragement.
